Application of Scientific Methodology in Spiritual Development

Dr. Chandana Jayaratne, Senior Lecturer in Physics, University of Colombo

Science is an understanding of matter, whereas spiritualism is related to the consciousness of the soul. Usually we analyze them as separate entities, whereas in reality, they are indeed inter-dependent and inalienable parts of each other. Though most of the religions lead to the spiritual development it was Buddha some 2500 years ago  clearly indicated the ‘Mind-and-Body’ (Nama_Rupa) mentality and corporeality conditioned by sixfold sense-based Consciousness. In science, originated in the west, the concept on existence of Mind as a separate entity different from the Body was first put forwarded by French philosopher and a physician R. Descartes (1556-1650). I

n 1860 Gustave Feschner published Elements of Psychophysics’ in which he outlined his experimental method of measuring the relationship between the physical stimulus and the sensory experience. This was one major milestone that led to what is now known as field of Psychology.

ARE BUDDHISTS IDOL – WORSHIPPERS? Ven K Sri Dhammananda Thero

Many people are under a misapprehension that Buddhists pray to idols. This is due to a lack of knowledge of the teaching of the Buddha and Buddhist customs and traditions.

The worship of the Buddha statue is quite a different aspect. Even this word ‘worship’ is also not quite appropriate from the Buddhist point of view. Paying homage should be the correct term. The End of the Universe

Buddhism is so extensive that there are still many things that people in the West don’t know about this great religion, especially from the old Scriptures, the suttas. For instance, do you know who the first man in space was? No, it certainly wasn’t Yuri Gagarin. It was Venerable Rohitassa! (AN IV, 45)

One of the beautiful things about Buddhism that encouraged me to become a Buddhist when I was young, and which keeps me as a Buddhist now, is that questioning is always encouraged.

You do not need to believe.

Aspects of Reality as Taught by Theravada Buddhism – Dr. G. P. Malalasekera

In regard to the question “What is ultimate reality?” the different schools of philosophy or systems of thought seem to fall into two main divisions. Some of them say that the ultimate reality is one: they believe in a permanent unity behind all the variety and change of the world. They are the monists, theists, animists, eternalists, traditionalists, fideists, dogmatists, ontologists, realists, idealists, and energists.

All these schools, though distinct among themselves and even opposed to each other on many points, nevertheless have this in common: they accept an ultimate reality as an entity in the metaphysical sense, whether that entity be called substance, or soul, or God, or force, or categorical necessity, or whatever other name may yet be invented.
