Gods in Buddhism – Professor M.M.J. Marasinghe

The Gods can be seen, heard and communicate with, but they cannot accept prayer, offering and respond to man’s request.

Buddhist cosmology, unlike the general Indian religious cosmologies is not a cosmographic description of the world. The world or the cosmos in the Buddhist conception does not compromise spatially separate compartments in space. 

Professor Marasinghe’s timely research raises many serious questions for those who have made Ritual Buddhism a mere second class Hinduism adopting any and all rites and rituals totally disregarding the clear teachings of the Buddha.

The evidence in Pali canonical texts is quite clear that the Buddha said there are gods. He has stated that his enlightenment was not complete until he gained the Eight-fold knowledge and insight which surpassed the gods. It is interesting to see how he gained his knowledge of the gods. It was not the result of an inspiration or a vision from an external source or power. It was the result of his acquisition of the higher knowledges.

The Buddha’s knowledge of the gods is not the exclusive right or ability either of the Buddha or of the arahat. It is quite clearly shown that it can be acquired by any one by following the path of spiritual training laid down in Buddhism, after he attains the Fourth Jhana, if he so desires.

Our addition:- From the above pointed out by Mr. Marasinghe, Let us do some analysis, taking the Buddha’s word forward as well.

• Is there a God in the religion preached by Buddha?
• What did Buddha mention about God?

When searching for answers to these questions, the first sutras that appear to us are the Kannakatphala and Sangarava Sutras from the Majjima Nikaya.  In this analysis, we refer to another book written by Mr. M. M. J. Marasinghe, “Perception and Belief , which he thoughtfully analyzes the above two sutras, Does God exist? Let us understand how fascinating the answers Buddha gave to the question asked by King Pesenadi

As per Kannakatphala Sutta ,  King Pasenadi Kosala asked “What the Blessed One says, lord, seems reasonable. What the Blessed One says seems logical. But, lord, are there devas?”

Buddha asked “But why do you ask, ‘?” (Mr Marasinghe’s point out:- Here, instead of giving an answer to that question, the Buddha, who asks the reason for asking such a question , The king, who answers this question, changes his stance on the original question: Does God exist? Instead he asks if the gods come here or become human.  “Whether the devas come back to this life, lord, or whether they don’t.” Then King changed the subject & asked 

Buddha who answers this second question “Those devas who are afflicted [2] come back to this life, whereas those devas who are unafflicted don’t come back to this life.”

Then King Kosol asked the Buddha another question. Buddha, does Brahma exist? asks As before, Buddha asked the reason for asking that question. King Kosol who answers this second question is the same as the first time…

මජ්ජිම නිකායේ එන කණ්ණකත්ඵල – මජ්‌ඣිම නිකාය » මජ්ඣිම පන්නාසකය » 4. රාජ වර්ගය සහ සඞ්ගාරව සූත්‍රය  – මජ්‌ඣිම නිකාය » මජ්ඣිම පන්නාසකය » 5. බ්‍රාහ්මණ වර්ගය යන සූත්‍ර දෙක සූත්‍ර පිටකයෙහි දැක්වෙන දෙවියන් ඇත් ද? යන ප්‍රශ්නය නගා ඇති අවස්ථා දෙක දැක්වෙන සූත්‍ර වශයෙන් වැදගත් වේ. මෙයින් කණ්ණකත්ඵල සූත්‍රයෙහිදී බුදුන් හමුවීමට පැමිණෙන කෝසල අධිරාජ්යා වූ පසේනදී කොසොල් රජතුමා හා බුදුන් අතර ඇතිවූ සාකච්ඡාවේදී රජු ” ස්වාමීනී දෙවියෝ ඇත් ද? යන ප්‍රශ්නය අසයි. මෙහිදී එම ප්‍රශ්නයට පිලිතුරක් දීම වෙනුවට, රජු විසින් එවැනි ප්‍රශ්ණයක් ඇසීමට හේතුව විමසන බුදු හිමියන් කුමක් නිසා එසේ දෙවියන් ඇත්දැයි අසන්නේ දැයි රජුගෙන් විමසයි. මෙම ප්‍රශ්නයට උත්තර දෙන රජු, තමන්ගේ මුල් ප්‍රශ්නයේ ස්ථාවරය වෙනස් කරමින් දෙවියන් ඇත් ද? වෙනුවට දෙවිවරු මෙහි පැමිණෙත් ද හෙවත් මනුෂ්‍යත්වයට පත් වන්නේදැයි අසයි. මෙම දෙවෙනි ප්‍රශ්නයට පිලිතුරු දෙන බුදු හිමියෝ, ව්‍යාපාද සහිත වූ හෙවත් කිළිටි වූ සිත් ඇති දෙවිවරු මෙහි උපදින බවත්, එසේ නොවන දෙවිවරු නො පැමිණෙන බවත් ප්‍රකාශ කරයි.
