Kukkuravatika Sutta: The Dog-duty Ascetic

පුණ්ණය, මෙලොව එකෙක් බලුතව අනූන කොට නිරතුරු කොට වඩයි. බලුසිල් අනූන කොට නිරතුරු කොට වඩයි. බලුසිත් අනූන කොට නිරතුරු කොට වඩයි. බලු වෙස් අනූන කොට නිරතුරු කොට වඩයි. හේ බලුතව අනූන කොට නිරතුරු කොට වඩා බලුසිල් අනූන කොට නිරතුරු කොට වඩා බලුසිත් අනූන කොට නිරතුරු කොට වඩා ශුනකාකල්ප අනූන කොට නිරතුරු කොට වඩා කාබුන් මරණින්මතු ශුනකයන්ගේ සහභාවයට පැමිණෙයි. ඉදින් ඔහුට මෙවන් දෘෂ්ටියෙක් වේ ද: ‘මම මේ ශීලයෙන් හෝ ව්‍රතයෙන් හෝ තපසින් හෝ බ්‍රම්සරින් හො දෙවි හෝ වෙම්වා අන්‍යතර දෙවියෙකිම් හෝ වෙම්වා’ යි. ඒ දෘෂ්ටිය ඔහුගේ මිසදිටු වෙයි. පුණ්ණය, මම මිථ්‍යාදෘෂ්ටිකයාහට දෙගතීන් අතුරින් එක්තරා ගතියක් කියමි. එනම්: ‘නිරෑ හෝ තිරිසන් යොන හෝ’ යි. පුණ්ණය, මෙසේ සැපයෙන බලුතව බල්ලන්ගේ සහභාවයට එළවයි. වරදවාගත් දිටු නිරෑ එළවතී වදාළෝ

මෙසේ කී විට සේනියා නිරුවත් බලු රාජකාරී තාපසයා හඬා කඳුළු සැලුවේය. 

බුදුරජාණන් වහන්ස මේ නිරුවත් බලු රාජකාරියේ යෙදෙන සේනියා තාපසයා  වන මට ඒ බලු රාජකාරිය අත්හරින ලෙසත් මට ධර්මය උගන්වන සේක් වා. 

පුණ්ණය,  අසව! පුණ්ණය, මෙ සතර කර්ම කෙනෙක් මා විසින් තමා මැ විශිෂ්ටඥානයෙන් දැන ප්‍රත්‍යක්ෂ කොට ප්‍රවිදිත වැ ඇත. කවර සතර කෙනෙක යත්:  අඳුරු පැසුණු අඳුරු කම්ම ඇත, දීප්තිමත් පැසුණු කම්ම ඇත, අඳුරු සහ දීප්තිමත් පැසුණු කම්ම ඇත, අඳුරු නොවන සහ දීප්තිමත් නොවන කම්ම ඇත…

Kukkuravatika Sutta  in English

The ox-duty ascetic gestured to his companion and asked the Buddha, “This Seniya is a naked dog-duty ascetic with a difficult religious practice: he eats food that is thrown upon the ground, he crawls all day on all-fours, he wears no clothing, he urinates on trees, and he follows people about most loyally. He has been practicing this dog-duty for a long time. What will be his future rebirth?”

.”Here, Punna, someone develops the dog duty fully and unstintingly, he develops the dog-habit fully and unstintingly, he develops the dog mind fully and unstintingly, he develops dog behavior fully and unstintingly. Having done that, on the dissolution of the body, after death, he reappears in the company of dogs. But if his view is such as this: ‘By this virtue or duty or asceticism or religious life I shall become a (great) god or some (lesser) god,’ that is wrong view in his case. Now there are two destinations for one with wrong view, I say: hell or the animal womb. So, Punna, if his dog duty is perfected, it will lead him to the company of dogs; if it is not, it will lead him to hell.”

When this was said, Seniya the naked dog-duty ascetic wept and shed tears.

“Venerable sir, I am not weeping that the Blessed One has spoken thus. Still, this ox duty has long been taken up and practiced by me. Venerable sir, I have confidence in the Blessed One thus: ‘The Blessed One is capable of teaching me the Dhamma in such a way that I may abandon this ox duty and that this naked dog-duty ascetic Seniya may abandon that dog duty.'”

Punna, there are four kinds of kamma proclaimed by me after realization myself with direct knowledge. What are the four? There is dark kamma with dark ripening, there is bright kamma with bright ripening, there is dark-and-bright kamma with dark-and-bright ripening, and there is kamma that is not dark and not bright with neither-dark-nor-bright ripening that conduces to the exhaustion of kamma.
