Buddhism & Modern Science – Dr.Granville Dharmawardena

“Buddha is the greatest scientist in the history of mankind.”
I have often heard this at bana sermons. This is completely wrong. Scientists are people who are constrained to work solely within and accept only, the knowledge generated by the scientific method. They generally reject knowledge generated by the other method. The Buddha did not use the scientific method and therefore he is not a scientist. Of the two methods of acquiring knowledge available to the human being the Buddha used the right brain centered intuition method, where as the western approach to acquiring knowledge used the left brain method. The Buddha trained his mind to an extreme high state of
enlightenment (Buddhahood) from where he could understand the true reality of nature in its totality.

The problem here is the words. So I invite the audience not to become ‘parapadama’ as described in the dhamma.
The same problem arises when the westerns ask us randomly their famous question ‘Do you believe in God?’. The answer we have to give is that ‘We do believe in Gods, but not as an individual who assumes the power of creation of the whole world around us, but as some other species of animals who are unseen to the naked eye among many things those are unseen and unheard.
The aforementioned saying in Sinhala sounds “vindyaggnaya’. The ‘vidya’ for us are the 3 ‘vidya’s known as ‘thri-vidya’. So the Lord Buddha is the one who mastered them beyond the limit hence named ‘vidyaggna’. In our context the word ‘vidya’ is always used without any reference to western science or knowledge at all: ‘avidya’, thri-vidya’, ‘vijja udapadi’ .etc. So in our context it is correct to say that “The Buddha is the greatest ‘vidyaggnaya’ of all time.
