Buddhism-The Teachings of the Buddha – Mr.W. Karu Peiris Former Programme Officer –National Heritage Commission

ReligionsWhat is a religion?

According to the Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary religion means the belief in the existence of a god or gods, who created the universe.

They have super natural power, over the natural consistence. They believe the god who created the man and the world, According to the Hinduism God Brahma created the world. God Vishnu controls and protects it and God Siva or Maheshwara is the destroyer. In that sense the Buddhism is not a religion.

It does not speak on a creator or destroyer. In a extended meaning which not believe the creator, controller or destroyer we can use the word religion to the popular Buddhism which most Buddhists practice today. The real Buddhism could define as the teachings of Buddha, and not as a religion.

The Buddha is a historical person. People had seen him. Buddha was a human being.
